BonaServes: Making Volunteering Fun!

Volunteering can be great fun, but all too many people think it is not for them or that they are too busy to help. This might be because they have never done it, or because they do not know where to start. BonaServes aims to end this problem by creating a place to find where to volunteer around campus and around the town plus a place to find out more about volunteering both locally (St. Bonaventure University) and globally.

3 in 10 volunteer

From NPR: (you can listen to the story there)

"Nearly 30 percent of Americans volunteer in social programs. The number went up again last year, and has been on the rise since the Sept. 11 attacks. Utah, Nebraska and Minnesota lead the way in terms of volunteerism. Women who have children volunteer more than anyone."

Yahoo's Philanthropy and Volunteerism page

did you know Yahoo has a page devoted to philanthropy and voluneerism?

Now you do! It is right here!

Ripple Effect

Darious Monsef of Hands-on frequently speaks of a ripple effect. Well that is the idea behind Project Ripple Effect. And while it is for Milwaukee, the same idea holds where ever you are!

From the JournalSentinel
"Toss a pebble into still waters, and watch the ripple effect. That's the idea behind a new community effort to involve more people in volunteerism and philanthropy in a community that needs both."
from the ProjectRippleEffect website:
"Greater Milwaukee Project Ripple Effect is a connection between those in need and those who want to help. If all of us give just an hour a week to a cause that matters, think of the effect on our city, our communities, not to mention our culture.'"
The hour idea is HUGE! Few can donate weeks at a time, but most of us can find an hour and those hours add up!

As an aside, their web site is what I would love BonaServes to turn into.
